Introducing the slowly building, ever expanding, exceedingly time consuming

Dark is Rising Lexicon

The Dark is Rising sequence is a series of fantasy books written by Susan Cooper. The series revolves closely around Arthurian legend as well as some Welsh mythology. There are five books that are part of the sequence, in order: Over Sea, Under Stone, The Dark is Rising, Greenwitch, The Grey King, and Silver on the Tree.

WARNING: THERE ARE SPOILERS ON THIS PAGE, PROCEED WITH CAUTION!

Over Sea, Under Stone is the first book in the sequence. This book introduces us to the Drew family, Simon, Jane and Barney, who are spending part of their summer holiday near the coast in Wales so they can visit with their Great Uncle Merry. Their uncle, as he is called (he isn't actually related to them), is considered an eccentric character as he disappears and reappears at will, for no apparent reason. Finding a hidden passage way leads them to an ancient map in the attic of the house they are staying in leads them on an adventure to find the Holy Grail. With the help of their great uncle, who really is more than he seems, they work out the clues to find the grail before the nefarious Withers', Mr. Hastings, and the boy Bill can find it and use it for whatever dark purpose they have in mind.

The Dark is Rising is the second book in the sequence. This book introduces an entirely new main character: Will Stanton. Will Stanton is the youngest of six children who live in a Buckinghamshire village on a very small farm. Will is about to turn eleven on Midwinter's Day when strange things begin to happen. Rooks are chasing him, his dogs are scared of him, and old neighbors are giving him strange ornaments shaped like a circle quartered like a cross to hang from his belt. Midwinter morning, Will wakes up to find his family cannot be woken, and so embarks on a journey which leads him to discover he is the last of the Old Ones. Meeting up with a certain Merriman Lyon (the oldest of the Old Ones) who explains about being an Old One and Will's quest to keep the Dark from rising. (Sound familiar?) There is even a snappy little rhyme to help Will remember that he must collect all of the six signs of the Light-wood, iron, bronze, stone, fire, and water-to help keep the Dark from rising again and covering the earth.

Can you write a better synopsis than I can? I BET YOU CAN! If you'd like to send me a much improved version of either of the above, or start from scratch on a Greenwitch, The Grey King, or Silver on the Tree synopsis, please E-MAIL me! Not only will you have my undying gratitude and thanks, I'll credit you for your genius!
